Evaluation of Performance Metrics for QPSK Modulated Mobile Communication System Using Root Raised Cosine & Raised Cosine Pulse- Shaping Filters

Mobile communication system uses Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) as one of the efficient digital modulation techniques. Pulse-shaping technique plays an important role in digital transmission. Root-Raised Cosine (RRC) and Raised Cosine (RC) filters are two important pulse-shaping filters used in mobile communication system. In this paper we have presented the study of some useful parameters of QPSK modulation like Error Vector Magnitude (EVM), Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Bandwidth Efficiency and Bit Error rate (BER), which have been regarded as the performance metrics of the system. Measurements have been carried out for various roll-off factors of the RRC and RC pulse-shaping filters. The performance of the RRC pulse-shaping filter has been compared with that of RC pulse-shaping filter for QPSK transmission. To study the effect of roll-off factor of the pulse-shaping filter on the Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) on the system, various Eye diagrams have been recorded for different values of the roll-off factors of the RRC and RC filter. The detailed analysis of the results would serve as an important guideline to the system designer to select a proper pulse-shaping filter with an appropriate value of roll-off factor for an efficient QPSK system.
